“It’s bold. When you go really contemporary like this, less is more. It’s so simple and elegant. The garage is well disguised—it basically disappears within the paneling—and the wood over the entry walkway and unexpected water element are great exterior features as well. Inside, the staircase is awesome, as are details such as the warm touches in the primary bathroom and the dark weathered brick, with almost gold flecks, throughout the home.”

“Even with the scattering of mid-modern homes in South Ogden, Utah, a modern oasis might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of homes in this coveted area. It’s a delightful surprise then, to come upon this incredible property that has been four years in the making, surrounded by mature trees and a half-hidden garden and creek.
The owners of this home created the perfect mix of their passions for nature and conservation with innovation and the highest attention to detail. Architecture it would seem, really is a universal language, because while every decision was deeply personal to the owners, the materials and spaces will speak to anyone who steps through the front door.”
“BALA WINNERS: THE BEST OF THE BEST
“Mid-century modern homes dominate the South Ogden, Utah, neighborhood where The Burch Creek Home is located. But the neighborhood’s newest addition fits right in, blending modern with a hint of Japanese inspiration and a nature-focused aesthetic that earned it the coveted Home of the Year award in the Best in American Living Awards (BALA) for 2023.
A low-slung front façade includes a “concealed” garage and uses a combination of handmade bricks and traditional Japanese shou sugi ban siding, both of which also appear on select interior walls…”
“In a nod to existing neighbors, the facade of the Burch Creek Home embraces a mid-century flare, with a concealed garage door and sleek modern features. You enter the courtyard through a custom sculptural gateway. Nature focused with a babbling brook and circulation flowing through, this space offers a moment of pause before entering the home.
Within the home, floor-to-ceiling windows blur the separation between indoor and outdoor space. Exterior materials, including handmade bricks and traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban siding, show a dedication to craft and quality. The exposed cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof stretches throughout the main floor. This structural and natural material provides a sense of tranquility and protection.
With the same enthusiasm, there is an effort to embrace environmental sustainable practices. Radiant heated and cooled floors regulate the interior climate (whole house fan).
Through nature-centric design, quality craftsmanship and sustainable practices, the Burch Creek Home stands as reflection of contemporary residential ideals and time resilient design.”
